Eira (meaning snow in Welsh) was one of four Welsh mares that came to Mane Chance together after we had been contacted by World Horse Welfare, who were looking for a home for them to go to without being separated. They had been living in a field since birth and had largely fended for themselves, so had had very little human connection and needed a home where they would be worked with slowly and patiently. Eira is happily settled in a middle position in their little herd – she is not the leader of the four but neither is she the lowest in the pecking order! She therefore has the ability to enjoy the best of both worlds – she does not have the responsibility of looking after the others yet she does not require looking after either. She is quite independent and happy to come over to our team for cuddles and scratches and was one of the first to be head collared. When the dentist first looked at our mares, he found that Eira had horrifically long teeth that must have been causing her pain and discomfort as well as affecting her eating. We have scheduled some regular visits to gradually file them down for her (it has to be a gradual process to allow the horse to adjust to the change) and already she is eating better and seems less bothered by them. She, in return, is happy to give cuddles to our team – obviously saying thank you for what we are doing for her!
