Equine best friend: Nell

When a family bought a new property a number of years ago, they inherited a new unexpected member of the family.  A horse, Raggles, that had been previously grazing the land with her mother, had been abandoned.  Sadly Raggles’ mother had died in the field some time before, so Raggles was all alone.  The family were not very experienced with horses and whilst they did their best to care for Raggles, they were not natural horse owners.  Another lady moved her own horse, Nell, onto an adjoining field which not only gave Raggles welcome company, but another pair of eyes to keep an eye on her.  In the autumn of 2024, Nell’s owner’s circumstances changed and a new home was being sought for both of them and we agreed to welcome them to Mane Chance.
We always do some veterinary checks when new horses arrive and Raggles’ results were worrying – she has a severely impaired liver function and shows signs of past chronic laminitis.  Whilst we can’t repair her liver, we can support her and we have put a plan in place to do just that.  As soon as she started to feel generally better, a very sweet personality has emerged which is wonderful.  We know we won’t have Raggles for years, as her liver is a problem, but we will certainly give her all the care and love we can for as long as she needs us.
